Coverage Indicies (CIs) are visual, descriptive, standardized measures of foreskin coverage. Typically these scales are used within the Restoration community as a means of tracking & comparing progress as well as setting milestones/goals for foreskin restoration. CI scales can also be used when assessing the coverage of an intact penis. The two most commonly used scales are the CI (Coverage Index) and the RCI (Real Coverage Index) however other similar metrics have been developed by members of the restoration community.
As the foreskin restoration movement gained support and followers, the need for standardized language became apparent. Bigelow described the process of restoration in three descriptive stages: Stage 1 - no glans coverage, Stage 2 - limited/partial glans coverage, and Stage 3 - significant/full glans coverage. Early scales such as this, were more subjective and not as well defined as later iterations of CI scales. As restoration developed as a practice CI scales were iterated on through communities like NORM (National Organization of Restoring Men), RestoringForeskin.org Forums, Reddit, device creators, and others.

RCI is an alternative Coverage Index created to address some of the limitations of the original CI scale. It was developed by kong1971 on the now defunct FRCChat.org forums. By design the RCI scale is more descriptive and focused on the restoring individual's foreskins rather than the foreskin length and functions of intact individuals with fully intact frenulums and ridged bands. The RCI scale takes more consideration for variable foreskin length within each stage (due to factors like temperature, humidity, arousal, etc.) more so than the original CI scale. One of the key flaws of the RCI scale is its limited descriptions beyond RCI-6, which Kong1971
