Is foreskin restoration real?
Yes. Foreskin restoration is based on well the established medical principle of tissue expansion. The process slowly expands remaining penile skin over time using gentle to moderate tension. You can view the successful progress of many restorers on the NSFW restoration subreddit.
Why isn't there more empirical/scientific evidence supporting foreskin restoration?
There are many reasons including (but not limited to): Lack of funding due to lack of profitability, Cultural/religious bias in favor of circumcision, time/difficulty/cost of research (particularly longitudinal studies that would be neccesary in studying restoration), profitability of existing pro-circumcision practices (e.g., sale of tissue derived from circumcised infants (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10597482/ https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-beauty-industry-is-part-of-a-baby-foreskin-flesh-trade-anti-circumcision-activists-warn/) https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-beauty-industry-is-part-of-a-baby-foreskin-flesh-trade-anti-circumcision-activists-warn/.
Am I really growing new skin?
Yes. Tissue under sustained tension triggers mitosis (i.e., cell division creating new tissue). While very early "gains" can be attributed to temporary stretching, all progrss after that initial period of stretching are from newly grown cells.
Will my results disappear if I stop restoring?
No. New skin/tissue grown during restoration is permanent. While coverage may look slightly less after stopping/taking a break, and your foreskin won't continue to lengthen after you've stopped, you won't lose what you've grown.
Is restoration safe?
Yes, restoration is safe for most individuals if done correctly (using gentle tension, practicing good hygeine, resting when needed, etc.). The main risks include skin irritation, dryness, swelling, brusing, and small skin tears typically attributed to over tensioning and/or incorrectly using devices.
Can I restore if I was very tightly circumcised?
Yes. Many restorers start from a very tight cut (CI:0 - CI:1). All circumcised penises even those tightly cut have some remaining foreskin that can be expanded. A tighter cut simply means a longer restoration process.
What are the benefits?
Restoring foreskin carries many of the same benefits afforded to intact men including: glans protection (eventually leaking to dekeratinization - which makes the glans softer, smoother, and more sensitive), easier masturbation/sex due to more effective skin movement "gliding", reduced friction during stimulation which can reduce or eliminate the need for lubrication and improve the comfort of penetrative sex for a partner, the improved aesthetics of having a natural appearance, as well as a variety of psychological benefits from an improved sense of body autonomy/body image to resolution of negative feelings associated with circumcision (particularly if done without one's consent). Many restorers also self-report improved pleasure/sensitivity however the extent of this improvement can vary significantly across restorers with some restorers reporting major differences after restoring and others reporting more modest changes.
Are the benefits of restoration a placebo/only psychological?
No. While psychological benefits can be an important part of restoration, significant observable physical and mechanical changes occur. While its not entirely clear (in the absesnce of controlled studies) if more subjective reports of improved pleasure are due in some part to a placebo effect, many men report substantial changes in sensation before and after restoration.
Why don't more men restore/why isn't restoration mainstream?
Many circumcised men simply aren't aware that restoration exists (and is effective). In countries like the USA, circumcision is normalized culturally (particularly with infants) which can make discussing/learning about circucision and by extension foreskin restoration difficult, with negative cultural views about intact penises proliferating. Many men simply are unaware of their genital anatomy and the possible impact of their circumcision. Some men are in denial about there being anything "wrong" with their penis and/or find difficulty acknowledging problems or concerns with their genitals. Doctors in pro-circumcision countries are often biased in favor of circumcision (particularly at birth), which can distort perceptions about the impact of circumcision and the utility/effectiveness of restoration. Restoration may be viewed as taboo or a sexual kink (for the vast majority of restorers it's not) which can bias men against pursuing it.
How much of the function/sensitivity can I expect to restore?
You can’t regrow specialized structures removed by circumcision (like the foreskin’s ridged band/frenulum if removed). However, most restorers report significant improvement in sensitivity and sexual satisfaction, though results vary individually. Anecdotally, individuals who were circumcised later in life and subsequently restored reported between 70% and 90% restored function/sensation compared to when they were intact.
How long does foreskin restoration take?
This varies substantially across restorers depending on: how much skin they had when starting out, consistency of restoration methods, time under tension, individual differences in skin growth rates, whether an individual is a "grower" or "shower", and an individual's ultimate restoration goal. Expect it to take years to complete, more years if you are tightly cut and/or want to achieve a higher CI (erect coverage) and fewer years if you had a looser cut and/or are only interested in flaccid coverage.
How can I speed up/induce Dekeratinization?
The safest and most effective way of inducing dekeratinization is time and consistency of glans coverage (particularly via foreskin) which will occur gradually and naturally with skin growth. Some individuals report that using gentle moisturizers can help speed up the process however harsher chemicals and exfoliants whould be avoided as they can potentialy damage existing tissue. Additionally, dekeratinization can occur without a foreskin by keeping the glans covered using a retainer or other device; note that dekeratinization without foreskin can cause irratation/discomfort from over-stimulation when not covered with a retainer.
Where do I start?
Check out the beginner's guide here.
What CI am I?
Refer to the CI guide here . If you're stil having difficulty assessing your CI consider asking community members their opinions (assuming you are legally able to share photos of your genitals, are willing to share photos of your genitals, and have the consent of the individual(s) you are sharing them with and/or are sharing in the appropriate designated places e.g,. r/restoringdick).
What can I do if my foreskin if its uneven (one side longer than the other)?
Focus on tensioning the shorter part of your skin using targeting manuals (e.g., MM3) on the shorter side. Over time these targeted manuals will help even out the skin asymmetry over time.
What methods are available?
Broadly speaking restoration methods can be broken up into manual methods (see here) and device based methods (see here).
What method is best?
While many restorers will argue in favor of one method or another being "the best", realistically whatever method you find comfortable, fits your lifestyle, and allows for consistent use over time is the best method.
What moisturizers are effective/safe to use on my foreskin and/or glans?
Safe moisturizers include coconut oil, MCT oil, shea butter, and vitamin E oil. Avoid anything with fragrances, glycerine, exfoliants, harsh chemicals, and alcohol.
Should I use soap when washing my foreskin and/or glans?
A mild soap (e.g., Castille soap) is fine for washing the outer skin. Rinsing with warm water is usually sufficent for cleaning the glans and inner foreskin. Keep in mind that overwashing the glans/inner foreskin can throw off the muscoa's natural pH as well has its healthy microbiome.
How much tension is too much/little?
Ideally you want a stretch that can be felt but remains comfortable. The skin can feel fatigued after a tugging session but shouldn't feel sore and should recover quickly. You will likely need less tension to stimulate tissue expansion than you think. See the beginners guide for more details.
How many hours/days should I restore?
If using manuals many restorers have reported success doing 8-10 sessions lasting between 2-5 minutes per day (See Andre's Method. If using devices the general rule of thumb is more hours under tension is better than fewer (but rest days are completely fine) with many restorers aiming for 4-12 hours of tension per day.
I don't want to spend money on devices, can I still restore?
Yes. Check out manual methods here.
Is manual tugging effective?
Yes. Many restorers have fully restored their foreskin using only manual methods (see Andre's Method). Devices are not at all required for successful restoration.
I'm intact. Can I use foreskin restoration techniques to lengthen my existing foreskin?
Yes! The same techniques that stimulate tissue expansion in circumcised men restoring their foreskins will work with intact men seeking to improve their coverage or add overhang. Additionally, some intact men have reported success using foreskin restoration techniques to address phimosis.
Am I too old/young to restore?
No. Men of all ages have successfully restored.
How can I guage my restoration progress?
There are many ways to guage progress including tracking your CI level, taking photos of your progress at regular intervals, and measuring your forced erect coverage.
Will restoration impact my sex life?
Restoration methods should not interfere with your sex life, restorers continue to have sex through their restoration journeys. After making significant porgress many restorers report improved sensation, less friction, less need for lubricant, and enhanced pleasure for both partners.
How do I keep my growing foreskin and glans clean while restoring?
Rinse your glans and inner foreskin thoroughly with warm water (soap is usally unneccesary). A mild soap can be used on the outer foreskin and shaft skin. Clean your devices every day with soap and water.
Can I restore overnight?
While some restorers have reported some success at low tension (particularly with t-taping) overnight restoring is generally not recommended due to the risk associated with nocturnal erections causing damage to the penis if there isn't sufficent slack skin or the device can't easily be displaced when erect.
If my foreskin feels loose, can I do anything to tighten it?
Keep in mind that intact men vary significantly in tightness and that when you stop restoring your skin will tighten naturally. However, yes there are methods restorers have successfuly used to tighten the tip of their foreskins, including regular retainer use and o-ring stacking which can help train the skin to taper over time. Some restorers also pursue touch up surgery as an option to tighten their foreskins.
I haven't noticed growth, what can I do if I think I've plateaued?
Be sure that you have actually plateaued, progress (even monthly) can sometimes be difficult to assess accurately. Also be sure that you are accurately tracking progress via photos or time under tension per day (or number of tugging sessions if using manual methods). If you're sure growth isn't happening consider changing methods/devices (there are many variations on manual methods, and devices out there), target skin areas you may not have been specifically tensioning before, and consider taking some time off before restarting as the recovery time can often boost progress.
What are the differences between an intact and circumcised penis?
Intact penises are typically much more sensitive and better able to glide smoothly during sex/masturbation compared to circumcised penises. Check out our anatomy breakdown here.
Why are infants routinely circumcised in countries like the USA?
The USA is an outlier as one of the few developed countries that routinely circumcise infants for non-religious reasons. Circumcision is common in the USA for many reasons cultural, historical, and because of current practices in American insurance/medical industries. In most other countries where circumcision is hihgly prevalent it is typically practiced for religious and/or cultural reasons. No major medical organization worldwide currently recommends routine infant circumcsion.
How common is circumcision internationally?
Around a third of men globally are circumcised, with the majority being for religious reasons. Circumcision rates are very low (< 10%) in Europe, Latin America and most of Asia (with the exceptions of Muslim-majority countries, Phillippines, and South Korea). In Africa circumcision rates vary significantly for religious and cultural reasons. Circumcision rates in Canada and Australia are at around 30% and 20% respectively and declining. In the USA rates of circumcision are declining but can be as high as 75%. American circumcision rates varry signficantly by region with it being less common on the West coast compared to the East Coast, South, and Midwest.
What's the difference between outer skin and inner skin?
Outer skin is essentially a continuation of penile shaft skin. Inner skin isn't actually "skin" per se, but rather mucosa (similar to the inside of your mouth). Mucosa is highly sensitive (more nerve endings), is typically thinner, smoother, and more pink/purple in color compared to outer skin (when not keratinized). On a circumcised penis the circumcision scar is typically the dividing "line" between inner and outer skin.
